Writing Fellow Consultation Policies

The Graduate School Writing Center offers consultations by appointment only. Our Writing Fellows, all highly accomplished graduate students, are a limited resource shared by the University’s entire 11,000-student graduate population.  Because consultations are in high demand, we ask that you please only schedule appointments that you will be able to keep.  To ensure that the Fellows are able to meet the demand for consultations, we implement the following policies for Read-Ahead, Brainstorming, and Next Day Brainstorming consultations.

General Policies:

  1. Only currently enrolled University of Maryland, College Park graduate students may seek consultations with the Writing Fellows.
  2. The Graduate School Writing Center is not an editing serviceFellows work collaboratively with students, brainstorming ideas, discussing structure, disciplinary expectations, argument, source use, stylistic choices, and technical issues in writing as appropriate; they do not proofread and edit manuscripts.
  3. Only documents of which the student is an author may be discussed in consultation.
  4. You may make up to EIGHT (Fall and Spring)/SIX (Summer) consultations per semester.
  5. To allow time for you to revise your work after a consultation, please request a consultation well before your writing is due.
  6. You may cancel an appointment up to 24 hours in advance through our scheduling software (click on your appointment to cancel it). If there is an emergency and you need to cancel less than 24 hours in advance, please email gradwritingfellows@umd.edu.
  7. If you are a no-show to TWO consultations (i.e., you miss the consultation without advance notice or cancel with less than 24-hour notice), you will automatically be locked out of the scheduling system.
  8. While we do not anticipate any such behavior, violence or inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
  9. We welcome your feedback! After your consultation, you will be emailed a link to our consultation evaluation form. Please take a few minutes to respond to the evaluation.

Read-Ahead Consultations:

  • All General Policies apply to Read-Ahead Consultations.
  • For consultations on documents to be effectively collaborative, Fellows can read and comment on up to 8 pages (double-spaced)/4 pages (single-spaced) of a document.
  • To allow Fellows time to read and review your document in advance of your consultation:
    • Read-ahead Consultations must be scheduled at least TWO days in advance.
    • The document you want to discuss at the consultation must be attached at least 24 hours before your appointment. The Fellow will not have read your document before your consultation unless you upload it at least 24 hours before your appointment time. If you are unable to upload your document before your appointment time, please come to your consultation anyway, as it will transform into a Brainstorming Consultation.

Brainstorming Consultations:

  • All General Policies apply to Brainstorming Consultations.
  • You indicate that you want a Brainstorming Consultation when you make an appointment on the scheduling system.
  • While there is no requirement to submit a document for Brainstorming Consultations, you should come prepared with ideas, questions, or topics that you would like to discuss with your Writing Fellow. If you are planning on discussing a document, the document should be less than 3 double-spaced pages. You may also attach documents that reflect your planning or work in progress before the consultation.
  • Brainstorming Consultations must be scheduled at least TWO days in advance.

Next Day Brainstorming Consultations:

  • All General Policies apply to Next Day Brainstorming Consultations.
  • Like regular Brainstorming Consultations, the Writing Fellow will not have read any of your work prior to the consultation, so if you are planning on discussing a document, the document should be less than 3 double-spaced pages. You should come prepared with ideas, questions, or topics that you would like to discuss.
  • To book a Next Day Consultation, you must already be registered with our scheduling system.
  • If you see an unoccupied appointment time for the next day that you would like to book, please email gradwritingfellows@umd.edu with the following information:
    • Name and email address you used to register on the scheduling system.
    • Time of the unoccupied appointment and the name of the Writing Fellow.
    • Brief description of what you want to work on during the consultation.
  • Please note that it will not always be possible to book a Next Day Brainstorming Consultation. Emailing to request that appointment time does not guarantee that the consultation is yours – you must have received a confirmation email before attending the appointment.
